After you have verified the cable type you are using and that the cables are firmly connected to both your computer and printer, you need to verify the brand and model of your printer. This is generally located on the front of the printer.
Now that you have the cabling type, manufacturer, and model of your printer, you can download the DRIVER for your printer.
A driver is a set of instructions that tells a computer how to use a particular device. Drivers are required for any computer to function with an internal or external component.
To locate the printer driver, visit the manufacturer's web site. Generally on the main page you will see a link for "downloads" or "drivers & software."
If you are using your PC or Parallels, download the driver for Windows XP. If you are using your Mac, download the driver for Mac OS X.
Dates and versions are generally given with printer drivers. Be sure to download the most current version of software for your system.
When you download your driver, be sure to note the location where you save your driver. This is VERY IMPORTANT. It would be best to save the driver to a folder on your desktop.
At this point, you should have identified how your printer is connected (what kind of cables you are using), the make and model of your printer, and downloaded the driver for your printer.
Now we need to add a new printer. To do this, go to:
Start
Printers and Faxes
Add a Printer
Once you select add a printer, a setup wizard will pop onto the screen. Follow the prompts to begin installing your printer.
You should start setting up your printer as a local printer attached to your computer. You have the option to automatically detect your printer, but chances are that your computer will not know where to locate the printer driver. You may have to tell your computer where to find that driver.
Now, you are prompted to select the port that your printer uses to connect to your computer. If your printer uses parallel cables, use LPT1. If your printer uses USB cables, select USB (virtual USB Port).
After you have selected the correct printer port, you will be asked to select the driver for your printer. Because you have downloaded the driver, you won't select from the default list. Select "Have disk" and "Browse." When you begin browsing for your driver, go back to your desktop (where you should have saved the file).
From this point, follow the remaining prompts to complete the printer install and print your test page.
