"The Gospel In
Blues”
The Carver Branch of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library System commemorated "Blues Week" with a series of noon lectures or talks. This
interactive talk delivered by Mr. Everrett Parker, a City of Baker School System Supervisor, explored the relationship of gospel texts and blues tunes
within the themes of African-American cultural history. The evolution of
these "Gospel Blues” was traced and highlighted from approximate inception to current
day, inclusive of the cultural ramifications that were concurrent with its
development. The audience also got a taste of the traits of Afro-Centric music and insights into the art of transforming Euro-Centric to Afro-Centric. The talk, with live demonstration of the music, included audience participation.
