Summer Youth Workers Begin! - Monday, June 07, 2010
|
1st Day -
WIA Summer Youth
June 7th Meeting for all workers is at
Baker High School Gym from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. - Following that
orientation, workers will be disbursed to other sites within the
district.
The City of Baker School System takes advantage
of this unique opportunity to
impact the lives of youth throughout our district and East Baton Rouge
Parish through the 2010 Summer Employment Program (SEP). The
SEP is funded with carry over Workforce Investment Act (WIA) – American
Recovery and Reemployment Assistance (ARRA) and Community Services Block
Grant
–ARRA. The services are provided in
a collaborative effort between WIA and DHDS.
This eight-week program gives participants ages 16 to 24 an opportunity
to work in various industries throughout the community. These
participants are eager to work this summer and gain job skills and
experiences that lead to endless possibilities. SEP provides the
participant
workers and pays their wages. As partners, the Baker School System
agrees to provide a safe worksite for SEP participants.
The City of Baker School
System's goal is to assist participants
in fulfilling a vision for a better future. Through the Summer
Employment
Program, it is the district's chance to provide experiences which
develop skills, enhance
knowledge and provide a new outlook on life.
Last summer, the parish program successfully
placed over 640 participants in worksites in Baton Rouge, Baker and
Zachary! Participating
worksites ranged from the public and private business sector to
non-profit
organizations and other governmental agencies. In addition to the skills
in
which our district equips participants, they will also benefit from
attending workshops
and seminars to enhance their work and life skills.
This summer, SEP is expecting to recruit income
eligible participants ages 16 through 24.
Prior to placement, eligible participants are interviewed and given job
readiness skills training. The Baker School System is poised to provide
participants
with meaningful summer jobs and good supervision.
For any questions regarding the Summer
Worksite participation, please contact Youth Program Manager Enola
Williams at (225) 358-4593.
