The Baker School Board on Tuesday elected a new board president and vice president and approved the hiring of Ferrante Dominique as principal of Baker Middle School.
Superintendent of Baker Schools, Dr. Herman Brister, honored outgoing board president Shonie Boxie and her predecessor Elaine G. Davis.
Board member Rosatina Johnson was elected unanimously to be board president for 2017. It was also unanimously agreed to elect Dr. Dana Carpenter as vice president. The president and vice-president usually serve one-year terms.
Boxie, the board president in 2016 was presented with two plaques citing important accomplishments by the school system and board while she was president. Davis, who was board president in 2015, was also awarded a plaque similarly recognizing the major accomplishments of the school system and the board during her term.
Dominique was officially named principal of Baker Middle School. Dominique has been an assistant principal at Peabody High School in Alexandria and a football coach at South Plaquemine High and led White Castle High, as head coach, to the 2010 Class 1-A State Championship.
In a brief message to the board and the audience at Tuesday’s meeting, Dominique said, “We do have a challenge at Baker Middle,” adding that he will be “raising expectations and building morale” at the school.
Both Johnson and Carpenter were sworn into their new positions during the January 10, 2017 meeting.
