SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS
The City of Baker School Board shall require the compilation of a list of qualified individuals to serve as day-by-day substitute teachers within the school system. The Superintendent or his/her designee shall prepare the list assuring that all those listed possess appropriate employment criteria, including verification of teachers' qualifications and certification.
Retired teachers may be employed as substitute teachers provided that use of retired teachers as substitutes is in accordance with the rules and regulations established by the Teacher's Retirement System of Louisiana and pertinent statutory provisions.
Qualified teachers may be selected to substitute for teachers who need to be absent for an extended period of time. Provisions shall be made for the hiring of, or contracting with applicable substitute teachers in these instances, as developed by the Superintendent and staff.
A teacher that is need of a substitute shall contact a substitute from the approved list. Once a substitute is confirmed, the teacher shall contact the principal or his/her designee and inform him/her of the name of the substitute that will be reporting to the school during his/her absence.
It shall be the responsibility of the principal or his/her designee and the regular teacher to ensure that the substitute teacher has the necessary materials and instructions to teach effectively, including textbooks, lesson plans, class rolls, schedules and local school procedures.
SUBSTITUTE TEACHER QUALIFICATION
At a minimum, substitute teacher applicants shall:
Be at least twenty-one (21) years of age
Possess a high school diploma
Score at the 10th grade level on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE)
SUBSTITUTE TRAINING
The School Board shall require the Superintendent or his/her designee to develop a training program for substitutes. Individuals interested in being substitutes must complete the training to be eligible to serve in any of the City of Baker schools.
SUBSTITUTE PAY
Compensation to be paid substitute teachers of the City of Baker School District shall be based upon the education level of the substitutes. Pay for substitutes shall be at the rates set by the School Board.
Any school employee whose job does not require a teaching certificate who performs work as a substitute teacher for more than a single class period shall be compensated for that time at the rate of a substitute teacher. The principal or his/her designee shall authorize the school employee to act as a substitute teacher prior to the employee’s participation in the classroom as a substitute, and shall verify the hours as a substitute teacher for payroll purposes.
